On Facebook, there is no Santa Claus

Wednesday, December 23, 2009

"Click through the prompts to watch the video and you'll be greeted not with an animated reindeer or snowman but rather a virus, a variant of the Koobface worm, which began making the rounds on social networks about a year ago."

The hottest breeding ground for malware today is Facebook, and with the arrival of the holidays, virus activity is heating up.

The latest involves a greeting from the man in red himself: One "***SantA***," who promises entertainment in the form of a holiday video posted to your wall.

You know how this ends. Click through the prompts to watch the video and you'll be greeted not with an animated reindeer or snowman but rather a virus, a variant of the Koobface worm, which began making the rounds on social networks about a year ago.

Ultimately if you do click through the fake plugin installation prompts you'll be infected with a virus that perpetuates itself through your activity: You'll be presented with a captcha (those funky images or words that you have to type correctly to prove you're human) that makes it possible for the SantA virus to spread further. Fail to enter the text and your computer will simply stop working.

Goodbye Microsoft Word?

"Microsoft Word is now scheduled to be prohibited from sale beginning January 11, 2010."

Office workers of America, enjoy your Christmas break. Because come the new year, things could get a little hairy around the office. Microsoft Word is now scheduled to be prohibited from sale beginning January 11, 2010. That's less than three weeks away. The good news: Microsoft has promised a fix, one which will be rolled out before the deadline arrives.

If you don't understand, you might have simply missed this story, or dismissed it as something that Microsoft would ultimately use its considerable clout to have pushed under a legal rug.

But it's no joke. In August of this year, a court sided with a small Canadian company called i4i that holds a 1998 patent on the way the XML language is implemented, finding that Microsoft was in violation of that patent. The result: Microsoft was told to license the code in question from i4i or reprogram it, or else Microsoft Word would have to be removed from sale in the market. The original ruling gave Microsoft until October to get its legal affairs in order, but appeals pushed that out a bit.

Are you looking to free up a few megabytes of space on your hard drive? Then you should check out Windows 7’s handy disk cleanup utility.Start off by typing Disk Cleanup in the Start Menu search box and hit return.

This will start the utility and you will be presented with a dialog box. Select the hard drive you want to clean up using the drop down box:

When you hit OK the utility will search the hard drive you selected to find files to possibly remove.

Note: It does not remove files automatically – you have to tell it later to do that so don’t worry about running the utility at this stage – nothing is being removed so far.

diskcleanup2 thumb Use Windows Disk Cleanup Utility to Free Hard Drive Space

Here the utility is searching the hard drive you selected. When it is complete it will show you this dialog box:

diskcleanup3 thumb Use Windows Disk Cleanup Utility to Free Hard Drive Space

As you can see it has initially identified 155MB of files to possibly be removed. That total size is based on which categories of files have their check box selected to indicate you want to remove those files.

The following screen shots show you some of the other file categories you can possibly select to remove those files – they are not checked by default:

As you click on each listing the main dialog box will explain what those files are related to in order to assist you in deciding to remove them or not.

If you choose Clean up system files then you will remove files for all users on the PC your working on. If your desperate for more space that might be necessary. The other users can always run this utility under their own login as well to clean up files. So once you have everything picked that you wan tot delete then hit the OK button and then confirm you want to perform the deletions:

Key word there is permanently – these files do not go to the Recycle Bin.

diskcleanup8 thumb Use Windows Disk Cleanup Utility to Free Hard Drive Space

Here you can see the utility is carrying out the file cleanup based on your selections. Once it is done there is no confirmation dialog of any kind – it just goes back to your desktop.

This should help you free up a few megabytes of space on your system.

Facebook Anthem

The "Facebook Anthem" is a viral music video produced in 2008 which features an array of everyday people singing a parody of Billy Joel's "We Didn't Start the Fire" with a chorus of "I'm Getting Bored with Facebook". The song's lyrics lament the explosion of Facebook applications, polls, quizzes, and features.

Lyrics

Facebook is a crime
When people have too much time
Sending me requests
IQ and brain tests
It's no f**king joke
I don't like to Super Poke
Scrabulous, Hotness
Update my status...

CHORUS
I'm getting bored of Facebook
So don't invite me
Throw a sheep
Or bite me

Please don't hug me
Give me your Graffiti
Hot or not?
So what?
I don't want to know.

Movie Quiz
S*x Quiz
Stu*id Johnny Depp Quiz
Family Guy
Which one am I?
They all have to go.

Pirates and Zombies
I really hate these
Sticky notes
Horoscopes
Join in the chorus please!

CHORUS
I'm getting bored of Facebook
So don't invite me
Throw a sheep
Or bite me

I hate applications
There are far too many
And I don't use any

Which Princess am I?
Send another Valentine
Group Request
Likeness Test
Will this ever stop?

Cute vs sexy
Colours represent me
Free Gifts
What's this?
Now that really takes the p*ss

Oh no
f**k me
Another Fortune Cookie
Texas Hold'em
I think I'm gonna fold

Friends for sale
Compare me
How many more can there be?!
Super Wall
Fun Wall
Drives me up the F**KING WALL!

I'm getting bored of Facebook
So remove the friends
Who drive you round the bend
Delete Applications
There are far too many
And they just keep going
On and on and on and on...

8 tips for safer online shopping

Tuesday, November 24, 2009

Online threats today come in the form of attacks on you and attacks on your computer. Here are eight (8) ways for you to have a safer online shopping experience:

[1] Keep your computer software up to date. Keep all software (including your web browser) current with automatic updates. If you are not already running Internet Explorer 8, the latest version of our web browser, click the button to the right to get it.

[2] Defend your computer. Use firewall, antivirus, antispam, and antispyware software. For an added layer of protection on your PC, you can download Microsoft Security Essentials for free or find other antivirus solutions.

[3] Avoid phishing scams and malware. By default Internet Explorer 8 runs SmartScreen Filter to help block and warn you of malicious software or phishing threats. SmartScreen Filter alerts you if a site you are trying to open has been reported as unsafe and allows you to report any unsafe sites you find.

Avoid phishing scams and malware

[4] Protect yourself from emerging threats. Cross-site scripting attacks are one of the increasingly sophisticated methods online criminals use to get your personal information. By default Internet Explorer 8 helps protect you against these attacks with a built-in Cross Site Scripting (XSS) Filter that is always on.

[5] Identify fake Web addresses. Internet Explorer 8 helps you avoid deceptive websites that can trick you with misleading addresses. The domain name in the address bar is highlighted in black to make it easier to identify a site's true identity.

Identify fake Web addresses

[6] Browse more privately. When you're using a public computer to check e-mail or you're shopping for a "surprise" gift on a family PC, it's a good idea to use InPrivate Browsing—a feature that helps prevent your browsing history, cookies, and other information from being retained on your computer.

Browse more privately

[7] Make sure payment websites use encryption. To confirm that a website uses encryption when processing credit card information, look for:
  • An "s" after http in the Web address—it should read https:
  • A tiny closed padlock padlock in the address bar, or at the lower-right corner of the window.
  • A green address bar—Internet Explorer 8 uses this to indicate a trustworthy site.
Make sure payment websites use encryption

[8] Never respond to unsolicited requests to update your account information. These e-mail messages might be scams for stealing your identity. Most legitimate companies never send unsolicited e-mail or instant message requests for your passwords or other personal information. And remember, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

Still Alive by Jonathan Coulton

LYRICS:

This was a triumph
I’m making a note here: huge success
It’s hard to overstate my satisfaction
Aperture Science
We do what we must because we can
For the good of all of us
Except the ones who are dead
But there’s no sense crying over every mistake
You just keep on trying till you run out of cake
And the science gets done and you make a neat gun
For the people who are still alive

I’m not even angry
I’m being so sincere right now
Even though you broke my heart and killed me
And tore me to pieces
And threw every piece into a fire
As they burned it hurt because
I was so happy for you
Now these points of data make a beautiful line
And we’re out of beta, we’re releasing on time
So I’m glad I got burned, think of all the things we learned
For the people who are still alive

Go ahead and leave me
I think I’d prefer to stay inside
Maybe you’ll find someone else to help you
Maybe Black Mesa
That was a joke, ha ha, fat chance
Anyway this cake is great
It’s so delicious and moist
Look at me still talking when there’s science to do
When I look out there it makes me glad I’m not you
I’ve experiments to run, there is research to be done
On the people who are still alive

And believe me I am still alive
I’m doing science and I’m still alive
I feel fantastic and I’m still alive
And while you’re dying I’ll be still alive
And when you’re dead I will be still alive
Still alive
Still alive

CHORDS:

Cannot Show Hidden Files (Windows XP)

To enable the viewing of Hidden files follow these steps:

In My Computer
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
After the new window appears select the View tab.

Put a checkmark in the checkbox labeled Display the contents of system folders.
Under the Hidden files and folders section select the radio button labeled Show hidden files and folders.
Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide file extensions for known file types.
Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide protected operating system files.
Press the Apply button and then the OK button and shutdown My Computer.

Now your computer is configured to show all hidden files.

Oppss!!

What if this setting always goes back to the previous setting "Do not show hidden files and folders". So hidden files are still in the black hole and none of them can see. Hmmpp..
I'm pretty sure you don't want to format HD and re-install the windows from the scratch.

You might be infected with the virus/worms or hijacked.

Go to Start > Run
Type "regedit"
Expand or LocateHKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced\Hidden

change the dword value to 1.

or simply run these VB Script from NET.

BTW you have been infected by a Trojan/worm.
I suggest you to install a good antivirus.
